The US chipmaker will upgrade its manufacturing campus in Leixlip, near Dublin. Currently, the facility produces Intel 3 silicon wafers and serves as Intel’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing site in Europe.
Additionally, the expansion will connect the upgraded plant with other facilities on the campus. It will also strengthen Intel’s European manufacturing network, support research and development, and provide retraining opportunities for employees.
Intel Executive Vice President of Intel Foundry Naga Chandrasekaran said the company has already started installing advanced manufacturing equipment. As a result, the new systems will support production of Intel Xeon 6 processors and future Intel Xeon chips built on the Intel 3 process.
According to Chandrasekaran, growing demand for artificial intelligence and data centre servers is increasing the need for Intel 3 wafers.
Meanwhile, Intel expects the investment to create several hundred new jobs. The company already employs about 4,900 people in Ireland.
Furthermore, most of the project will finish by the end of 2027. Intel said the investment will account for about 30% of its planned $17 billion global capital spending for 2026.
Since 1989, Intel has invested around €30 billion in Ireland. Moreover, more than half of that amount went toward expanding semiconductor manufacturing between 2019 and 2023.
Finally, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin welcomed the announcement. He described the investment as a strong vote of confidence in Ireland’s position as a leading hub for advanced manufacturing.
