Gul Plaza: Karachi police names union leaders in fire case challan

Investigators allege negligence by union office-bearers as prosecution returns challan with objections amid ongoing legal scrutiny

Karachi police have named several union leaders in the challan submitted in the Gul Plaza fire case, holding them responsible for the blaze at the major shopping centre. Gul Plaza remains a central reference point in the investigation into one of the city’s deadliest commercial fires.

According to prosecution sources, the challan identifies union president Tanveer Pasta, vice president Ammar Ismail, general secretary Ameen, and joint secretary Muhammad Ramzan as responsible for the fire incident. The prosecution department, however, has returned the challan with objections for further review.

Authorities say the investigation has linked the union office-bearers to alleged lapses that contributed to the outbreak of fire at the M.A. Jinnah Road shopping complex. Officials are still examining compliance and safety oversight at the site.

The fire broke out on 17 January this year and continued for three days, engulfing the multi-storey building. More than 70 people were killed in the incident, while the structure was completely destroyed. Compensation has been provided to 61 of the 72 affected families following official briefings to the chief minister.

A judicial commission has already completed its inquiry into the tragedy, adding further weight to ongoing legal proceedings. The final determination of responsibility will now depend on court proceedings as the case moves forward.
