Gianni Infantino has reportedly sought support from the Trump administration after facing growing criticism over FIFA’s abandoned plan to sell a stake in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup.

The New York Post, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Infantino repeatedly tried to contact U.S. President Donald Trump after FIFA withdrew the proposal last week.
The report said the FIFA president felt increasingly isolated as criticism over the failed initiative intensified.
According to the report, Infantino also arranged private talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Two sources familiar with the matter told the newspaper that Infantino planned to speak with Rubio shortly after 9 a.m. Eastern Time.
Neither FIFA nor the White House immediately commented on the reports. Reuters said both organisations had not responded to requests for comment.
FIFA had proposed creating a new commercial entity and selling about a 20% stake to private investors.
The governing body hoped the deal would raise up to $4.2 billion. However, strong opposition from key stakeholders forced FIFA to abandon the proposal on Friday.
The failed initiative has increased scrutiny of Infantino’s leadership.
Attention has now shifted to his potential bid for another term as FIFA president from 2027 to 2031. Observers say the setback could influence discussions about FIFA’s future commercial strategy and governance.
