German Consul General and MALC CEO Bring Hope to Flood-Affected Communities in Sindh

German Consul General and MALC CEO visited

Tando Jan Mohammed to bring relief to

communities impacted by the floods of 2022

Press Release

Karachi: Dr. Rüdiger Lotz, the German Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Karachi, and Mr. Mervyn Lobo, CEO of the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC), embarked on a meaningful journey from Karachi to Tando Jan Mohammed. Their mission was to support and bring relief to communities impacted by the catastrophic floods of 2022.

In the aftermath of the Sindh floods two years ago, Dr. Lotz visited MALC’s healthcare center in Tando Jan Mohammad. During his visit, he commended MALC’s efforts, stating, “People here were already in a challenging situation before the floods. They require medical care and support, which MALC is diligently providing. As the German Consul General in Karachi, I deeply value MALC’s work, which is essential for the health stability in this region. We congratulate MALC on their exceptional contributions.”

Dr. Lotz underscored the enduring partnership between the German Consulate and MALC, a collaboration that started over 60 years ago with the pioneering efforts of Dr. Ruth Pfau. “Our support for MALC has spanned more than six decades, and we remain committed to this vital tradition. It has connected countless Pakistani individuals with Germany and its generous donors.”

Reflecting on the visit, Mr. Lobo shared, “The visit rekindles memories of Dr. Ruth Pfau. Despite the rain, we proceeded with our program, embodying the resilient German spirit that continues to inspire our work. Although the day was both exciting and challenging, our dedication to serving marginalized communities in Dr. Pfau’s spirit remains unwavering.”

Upon arriving at the MALC Tando Jan Muhammad center, the team was warmly received with traditional ajrak and topi by the center’s staff. The day included a tour and a briefing on the center’s crucial healthcare services, which continue to support marginalized communities. The visit also featured a wheelchair distribution ceremony, providing much-needed mobility aids to those in need.

The journey then took the team 25 kilometers further to Haji Khan Village, Taluka Jhudo, District Mirpurkhas. Here, the community eagerly awaited the completion of 31 newly built one-room houses. These homes, constructed with resilience and care, represent a new beginning and provide secure shelter for families recovering from the floods.

Dr. Lotz and the MALC team engaged with the villagers, participating in tree-planting activities and sharing in the community’s joy. The villagers expressed profound gratitude for their new homes, which are designed to withstand future monsoons and offer stability as they rebuild their lives.

This heartfelt day brought renewed hope and happiness to a community that had been deeply affected by the 2022 floods. The smiles and gratitude shared marked the start of a new chapter for the residents of Haji Khan Village.
