Fake News Creating Serious Social Challenges, Says MQM MNA Hassan Sabir

Women Media Center Workshop Highlights Digital Ethics and Responsible Journalism in Karachi

KARACHI: Hassan Sabir said that the spread of unverified and fake news was causing serious harm to society and creating multiple social issues, urging responsible use of digital platforms and ethical journalism.

He expressed these views while addressing a two-day workshop organized by Women Media Center Karachi on the topic “Digital Media: Ethics and Responsible Journalism,” where he attended as the chief guest.

The workshop, held on May 21 and 22 in Karachi, was attended by female students associated with the media sector, who received practical training on different aspects of journalism and digital media.

Speaking about the growing influence of the digital era, Hassan Sabir said cybercrime laws already existed to identify and tackle digital crimes, but many YouTubers failed to educate the public about these legal frameworks.

He also noted that several countries around the world were attempting to limit excessive gadget usage among children due to its social and psychological impacts.

Referring to Pakistan’s digital landscape, the MQM lawmaker said YouTube had remained banned in Pakistan for several years in the past, which negatively affected multiple sectors.

Discussing women’s empowerment, Hassan Sabir said the Constitution of Pakistan and the Election Act guaranteed reserved seats for women. He added that during the tenure of former president Pervez Musharraf, the number of reserved seats for women was increased, reflecting growing efforts to empower women in the country.

At the conclusion of the workshop, certificates were distributed among participants, while the chief guest appreciated the efforts of Women Media Center Karachi for promoting ethical journalism and media education.
