Electric Air Taxi US launches first trial flights for future eVTOL transport network

Electric Air Taxi trials have officially begun in the United States after federal authorities completed the first demonstration flights under a programme designed to integrate electric aircraft into the country’s future transport network.

The initial flights took place under a pilot programme led by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the US Department of Transportation. During the missions, electric aircraft transported human organs for transplant between Maryland and Virginia.

The demonstrations form part of the Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program. The multi-year initiative aims to evaluate the safety, reliability and operational performance of electric aircraft before commercial services begin.

BETA Technologies, an electric aviation company backed by Amazon, will participate in seven of the programme’s eight pilot projects. During the first missions, the company transported organs prepared by biotechnology firm United Therapeutics over a combined distance of about 275 nautical miles.

BETA Technologies Chief Executive Officer Kyle Clark said the successful trials could help expand affordable electric air transport for medical services across the United States.

Meanwhile, aviation experts believe electric air taxis could ease urban traffic congestion and improve emergency medical transport. They also expect the technology to support cargo deliveries and defence operations in the future.

However, regulators have delayed commercial passenger services because certification requirements remain extensive.

The pilot programme began under an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump last year to speed up the certification and deployment of electric air taxis.

The initiative covers 26 US states and includes eight pilot projects. BETA Technologies plays a leading role in most of them.

The company expects its conventional runway-operated electric aircraft to receive certification by 2027. It also aims to secure full approval for its eVTOL aircraft by 2028.
