Bollywood Stars Turn Back Time as Viral ’80s AI Trend Takes Over Social Media

Celebrities including Parineeti Chopra, Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra are using artificial intelligence to recreate the colourful fashion and cinematic style of the 1980s.

The 1980s have made another comeback, but this time Bollywood celebrities are travelling back to the decade with the help of artificial intelligence.

Social media has recently been flooded with retro-style photographs showing celebrities in colourful outfits, voluminous hairstyles, vintage settings and old-school film aesthetics. The viral trend has given stars a playful way to imagine what they might have looked like during one of Bollywood’s most recognisable eras.

Parineeti Chopra joined the trend with her husband, Raghav Chadha, sharing AI-generated images that portrayed the couple as an ’80s-era pair. The photographs recreated the decade’s distinctive fashion and colourful visual style, while Chopra also joked about why the two could not have met when they were born.

Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra also embraced the trend, appearing as though they had stepped directly out of an ’80s Bollywood movie. Malhotra was shown in a retro double-denim outfit paired with aviator sunglasses, while Advani channelled the decade through bright colours, statement accessories and voluminous styling.

Ameesha Patel took the nostalgic concept even further. Her AI-generated images featured neon pink fashion, denim shorts, leg warmers, trainers and a large boombox, recreating several visual elements strongly associated with the decade.

But not every celebrity needed artificial intelligence to join the nostalgia wave.

Actor Vijay Varma shared an actual photograph from the 1980s, joking that he was participating in the trend “without wasting water or energy.” His post offered a real glimpse into the era rather than an AI-generated recreation.

Filmmaker Farah Khan also chose authenticity over artificial intelligence, sharing her own photographs from the decade with the message: “Who needs an AI trend for the 80’s!! Here’s the real deal.”

Politician Shashi Tharoor followed a similar route, posting photographs from his actual life during the 1980s. His collection included pictures with his sons and highlighted the difference between AI-generated nostalgia and memories preserved in personal family archives.

The 80s AI trend has quickly evolved into more than just another social-media challenge. It has combined artificial intelligence with Bollywood nostalgia, allowing younger celebrities to reimagine an era they never experienced while giving those who lived through it an opportunity to share the real thing.

From oversized hairstyles and bright colours to denim, vintage photography and classic Bollywood aesthetics, the trend shows how technology can recreate the look of the past — even as some celebrities remind social media that authentic memories may still be the best throwback.
