Bilawal launches a groundbreaking solar energy

project to provide free solar home systems to 1.6

million low-income households across Sindh

Staff Reporter

Karachi: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has launched a significant initiative under his election manifesto, the ‘Awami Muashi Muahida’ (People’s Economic Agreement). This ambitious project aims to distribute solar home systems to 1.6 million low-income households across Sindh, providing much-needed relief from expensive electricity and load shedding.

Phase 1 of Solar Energy Project Launched in Sindh

In the first phase of this project, 200,000 families identified through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will receive free solar home systems in two districts of Sindh. The initiative, spearheaded by the Sindh government, aligns with the 10-point ‘Awami Muashi Muahida’ pledge to provide free solar electricity to underprivileged families.

During the inauguration ceremony at the Chief Minister House, Chairman Bilawal emphasized the PPP’s commitment to sustainable solutions for public welfare. He highlighted that if implemented nationwide, this project could significantly ease the burden on lower-income segments.

Nation Recognizes Need for Affordable Solar Energy

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari shared that his proposal to provide solar energy to low-income families initially faced criticism. However, he expressed satisfaction that the importance of affordable electricity for the poor is now widely recognized. The project prioritizes BISP beneficiaries and will eventually expand to all districts in Sindh.

Commitment to Affordable Electricity Through Public-Private Partnerships

The PPP Chairman reiterated the Sindh government’s dedication to delivering affordable electricity, inspired by the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. He pointed out that Sindh’s power plants supply the cheapest electricity to K-Electric and that the government is investing in wind power and energy parks under public-private partnerships.

Future Plans for Free Electricity Up to 300 Units

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also discussed the PPP’s vision of providing 300 units of free electricity to lower-income groups. He criticized the federal electricity system, stating that it is dysfunctional and overburdened with taxes. He emphasized that green energy could be a sustainable solution to the electricity crisis.

Response to Punjab Government’s Electricity Cost Reduction

Commenting on the Punjab government’s recent announcement to reduce electricity costs, Bilawal expressed cautious optimism but questioned the long-term impact of short-term relief measures. He called for a national interest-driven approach over political agendas.

Key Attendees at the Event

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, former Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, and other provincial ministers and party leaders.
