New York: At the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Attaf, delivered a compelling speech calling for urgent reforms to the global system to address imbalances that hinder peace, justice, and the rule of international law.

Attaf outlined Algeria’s vision for a more equitable international order, emphasizing the need for a legal framework based on the “power of law, not the law of power.” He stressed the importance of multilateralism and adherence to the UN Charter, criticizing the current state of global conflicts, economic disparities, and climate change challenges that threaten international stability.

Reforming the UN System for Global Peace

Minister Attaf underscored the necessity of reforming the UN to ensure that international relations are governed by justice, legality, and the rule of law. He called on the global community to collectively work toward an international system rooted in equality before the law, rejecting the use of force and punitive unilateral measures.

He stated, “We are in dire need of restoring our commitment to the United Nations Charter and the rules of international law, before which we are all equal and must respect.”

Palestine and Lebanon: Ending Occupation and Aggression

In his speech, Attaf voiced Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, denouncing the ongoing Israeli occupation and violence in Palestine and Lebanon. He called for urgent international intervention to halt Israeli aggression, condemning the war crimes committed against Palestinians and the destabilization of the region.

He reiterated President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s previous call for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations, stating, “The full membership of the State of Palestine remains a decisive step towards preserving the two-state solution and maintaining stability in the region.”

Supporting Self-Determination in Western Sahara

Minister Attaf also reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to the decolonization of Western Sahara, expressing strong support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He called for renewed negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front, with the backing of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy.

“The phenomenon of colonialism is destined to disappear, sooner or later, and the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people will find their way to implementation,” Attaf declared.

Advocating for Africa’s Representation and Development

Algeria continues to be a staunch defender of African interests on the global stage. Attaf emphasized Africa’s right to fair representation in the UN Security Council and global financial institutions. He urged the reform of international financial systems to ensure Africa’s access to development resources and debt restructuring.

“Africa looks forward to correcting the historical injustice imposed on it in the Security Council and advancing its strategic priorities for global development,” he added.

Algeria’s Comprehensive Renaissance and Economic Growth

Concluding his speech, Minister Attaf highlighted Algeria’s progress under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. He emphasized the country’s political stability and its rise as Africa’s third-largest economy, driven by comprehensive reforms aimed at reducing dependency on hydrocarbons and promoting a diversified economy.

Algeria, he noted, remains committed to enhancing international cooperation and fostering partnerships that benefit all nations, particularly those in Africa and the Arab world.

Algeria’s growing role as a regional and global player is grounded in its rich history and its determination to uphold the principles of justice, solidarity, and the rule of law.
