Abdul El-Sayed, who has made history as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate, brought his admiration for Taylor Swift into his 2026 election campaign, drawing attention from the singer’s fans with a viral TikTok video.
The clip showed the Michigan Democrat dancing to Swift’s hit You Belong With Me (Taylor’s Version) while wearing an American-flag cowboy hat, jeans and his trademark black V-neck shirt.
His campaign team altered parts of the song’s lyrics to take aim at Republican rival Mike Rogers. The video reportedly attracted 5.7 million views, making it one of El-Sayed’s most-viewed campaign posts.
Swift fans responded enthusiastically in the comments. One user wrote, “Michigan Swifties unite!!!! Proudly voting for you sir,” while another commented, “LMAO NOT MILLENNIAL SWIFTIE IN MY POLITICS SIGN ME UP.”
El-Sayed went on to defeat Rogers in Michigan’s November 3 Senate election, securing a historic victory.
El-Sayed praises Swift’s self-awareness
The politician’s connection to Swift extends beyond the campaign video. During an appearance on Liz Plank’s Boy Problems podcast, El-Sayed praised the singer’s understanding of herself and her artistic work.
“She is one of the most self-understanding artists of our time,” he said.

Taylor Swift’s political involvement
Swift has also publicly expressed her political preferences. During the 2024 US presidential election, she endorsed Democratic candidates Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Although Swift did not publicly endorse El-Sayed, her music became a prominent feature of his campaign’s social media presence, attracting attention from fans during the election season.
