Abhijeet Dipke How one viral post sparked India’s student protest movement

Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old political communications strategist, has become the face of India’s biggest student protest movement. The campaign began after one of his social media posts went viral and inspired nationwide demonstrations.

A six-word post that went viral

The movement began on May 16 when Dipke posted six words on X: “What if all cockroaches come together?”

Dipke posted the message as a satirical response to remarks by Supreme Court judge Surya Kant. He had compared unemployed youth to “cockroaches” during a speech. The judge later said his comments had been misunderstood.

Soon afterwards, supporters created the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The satirical platform united young Indians frustrated by unemployment, exam paper leaks and government accountability.

Student protests gather momentum

Thousands of students have gathered in New Delhi in recent days. They are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over an alleged medical entrance exam paper leak.

The paper leak affected around two million students. Protests have also spread to several other cities, including Mumbai.

Dipke becomes the movement’s public face

Dipke returned from Boston in early June. He joined protesters near Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and soon became the movement’s best-known leader.

He regularly addresses crowds. He urges demonstrators to remain peaceful while continuing their campaign.

His growing profile has also drawn criticism. During one rally, a woman threw blue ink at him. She accused the movement of insulting the Hindu deity Lord Ram.

From political messaging to activism

Dipke joined the social media team of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2020. There, he developed a communication style based on humour, satire and memes.

He is no longer associated with the party. However, the AAP and several opposition groups have backed the student movement.

In 2023, he moved to the United States to study public relations. Despite living abroad, he continued to closely follow Indian politics.

Social media fuels nationwide campaign

Delhi-based YouTuber Meghnad S helped launch the satirical Cockroach Janta Party website. He used AI tools shortly after Dipke’s post went viral.

The movement’s Instagram account gained millions of followers within days. It quickly transformed an online campaign into a nationwide protest movement.

Despite receiving threats, Dipke returned to India. He has vowed to stay until the protesters’ demands are met.

Speaking to supporters this week, he said the movement would continue until justice was achieved.
