KARACHI: Zong, Pakistan’s leading technology service enterprise, has partnered with the Alkhidmat Foundation to improve access to primary education in Tharparkar. The initiative focuses on underserved and remote communities in Sindh.
The project introduces climate-resilient community schools. These schools aim to provide safe and stable learning environments for children in difficult-to-reach areas.
Education Gap Remains a Major Challenge
Currently, Pakistan faces a serious education crisis. Around 25.1 million children between the ages of 5 and 16 remain out of school.
In districts like Tharparkar, the situation is worse. Poverty, scattered settlements, and weak infrastructure limit access to education. As a result, girls are particularly affected.
Community Schools Established in Remote Villages
To address these challenges, Zong and Alkhidmat established Chownra Schools. These schools operate in villages including Chopni Wasai Pota in Mithi and Sono Ki Dhani in Islamkot.
Previously, these areas had little or no access to formal schooling. Now, children can study closer to home.
Infrastructure Built for Long-Term Impact
Based on assessments conducted in 2025, the project focused on rebuilding local education infrastructure. The partners constructed and renovated climate-resilient school buildings.
In addition, they provided furniture, learning materials, sanitation facilities, and boundary walls. These improvements created safer and more child-friendly classrooms.
Early Results Show Strong Attendance
So far, the schools are educating around 80 students from local communities. Attendance rates have reached nearly 85 percent.
Because of this initiative, more children are now attending school regularly. It has also improved access for girls, who previously faced major barriers.
Leadership Highlights Vision for Inclusive Growth
Speaking about the project, Nabila Yazdani from Zong said education is essential for inclusive development. She said the company is committed to building safe and resilient learning spaces.
Similarly, Dr. Syed Tabassum Jaffri of Alkhidmat Foundation Sindh praised the partnership. He said the initiative strengthens long-term community development across Sindh.
Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Building a More Inclusive Future
Finally, Zong said it will continue investing in education-focused projects. The company aims to expand opportunities for underserved communities across Pakistan.
Through such partnerships, both organizations hope to support long-term social and economic development.
