From the Brink of War – A Breath of Peace

In this city of lights, where even the waves of the sea sometimes reflect the ups and downs of the economy, a strange mix of seriousness and hope has recently been observed in the markets. This is the same Karachi where the pulse of a trader is tied to global developments, where even a minor international tension can affect everything from shop shutters to factory boilers. In such a context, the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran was not merely a diplomatic development, but averted a potential catastrophe an event that pulled the world back from the brink of a possible nuclear confrontation.

In Pakistan, particularly within Karachi’s business community, this ceasefire is being viewed not just as a temporary political step, but as a reflection of successful diplomacy. Business circles believe that the diplomatic efforts led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir played a key role in this process. According to them, at a time when the world seemed driven by the obsession with power projection, Pakistan chose the path of restraint, wisdom, and dialogue, setting a positive example. It is this approach that strengthens nations not through war, but through peace.

Trade leaders also emphasized that had tensions escalated, the impact would not have remained confined to the Middle East. Instead, it could have triggered a potential nuclear conflict, endangering millions, even billions, of lives. In this context, they regard the ceasefire as a critical milestone for humanity an opportunity for the world to breathe, and a moment to reassess its decisions.

However, despite this encouraging development, industrial and commercial circles remain fully aware of ground realities. They believe that the immediate effects of the ceasefire will not be reflected in the economy. Inflation, fuel prices, and the cost of essential goods will not decrease overnight. This is because stability in global markets takes time, and economic indicators do not respond instantly unless conditions improve sustainably. For this reason, industrialists see the ceasefire as a beginning, but not as an immediate source of economic relief.

In this context, Karachi’s business community has also presented several timely and important recommendations to the government, which could prove beneficial not only in the current situation but also in the long run. Among the most significant is the call to expedite the Iran Pakistan gas and oil pipeline project. This project has long remained stalled due to political, diplomatic, and international pressures, yet the current circumstances have once again highlighted its importance.
Energy is the backbone of any economy, and for a developing country like Pakistan, access to affordable and reliable energy is nothing short of essential. If the Iran gas and oil supply project is completed, industries would gain access to cheaper energy, significantly reducing production costs. This would make Pakistani products more competitive in global markets and could boost exports. This is a point that cannot be ignored in the national interest.

The business community has also pointed out another long-standing issue that continues to trouble industrialists: delays in tax refunds. They argue that the government’s policy of collecting advance taxes for three months, followed by delays in issuing refunds, ties up the working capital of businesses. Capital that could have been used for expansion, job creation, and economic growth remains stuck within bureaucratic complexities.
This situation not only slows down business activity but also undermines investor confidence. In an already challenging economic environment, such obstacles create further difficulties. Therefore, it is imperative for the government to reform the tax system, expedite refund processes, and ensure transparency, providing the business community with the facilitation it rightfully deserves.

Interestingly, these demands are not for concessions or special favors, but for the establishment of a fair and balanced system. The business community believes that if the government provides a conducive environment for trade, they can not only stand on their own feet but also contribute significantly to the national economy. This represents a partnership where both the state and the private sector benefit.

As for the ceasefire, it is important to understand that it is a temporary pause a chance for both sides to reconsider their positions and move towards lasting peace. Pakistan’s role in this process is certainly commendable, but the real test lies ahead. If this ceasefire evolves into permanent peace, it will be a positive development not only for the region but for the entire world.

Pakistan must continue its diplomatic efforts, not only as a mediator but also as a responsible state. At the same time, it must focus on strengthening its internal economy, resolving energy issues, and improving the business environment. Because success on the global stage only holds meaning when there is stability at home.

In conclusion, it would not be an exaggeration to say that Karachi’s business community has demonstrated remarkable insight and foresight. They have not only understood global developments but have also proposed practical solutions in the national interest. It is now the responsibility of the government to seriously consider these recommendations and take steps that address current challenges while laying a strong foundation for the future.

This ceasefire, though temporary, has opened a door towards peace, stability, and progress. Now it is up to us whether we move forward through that door or once again get lost in the whirlpool of uncertainties.
