2XKO Riot Games to End Active Development of League of Legends Fighting Game

Riot Games will end active development of 2XKO, its League of Legends-based fighting game, after concluding that player engagement has not reached a sustainable level.

The company announced the decision on Thursday.

Riot said it will finish the game’s remaining planned content before ending active development in December.

The developer said many players tried 2XKO, while a dedicated community continues to play it regularly.

However, not enough players have remained active to support the game’s long-term development.

Riot cites weak player retention

Riot said it assessed several indicators before making the decision.

These included revenue, player retention, new-player numbers and overall engagement.

The company said major updates failed to produce a lasting improvement in the game’s performance.

Riot also said the game costs substantially more to operate than it generates.

The company therefore concluded that continued active development would not be financially sustainable.

Final updates planned for 2026

Riot will continue development through the end of 2026.

Lux will join the game in September, followed by Samira in October.

The final December update will focus mainly on bug fixes.

It will not introduce a major batch of new content.

Riot will also stop selling KO Points, the game’s premium currency.

The company plans to unlock all champions for players.

Players eligible for refunds

Players who made purchases on or before August 20 can request refunds.

On Windows PC, Riot will refund KO Points and Starter Edition purchases to the original payment method.

Most PC refunds should arrive within two weeks.

Riot expects to complete all PC refunds by November.

Players on PlayStation and Xbox will receive refunds through the respective platforms.

2XKO servers will remain online

Ending active development will not make 2XKO unplayable.

Riot plans to keep the game’s online servers running after 2026.

Offline gameplay will also remain available.

The game will continue as a free-to-download title on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

Riot expects 2XKO to have 17 playable characters when active development ends.

The decision marks a major setback for Riot’s attempt to expand the League of Legends universe into the fighting-game genre.
