US and Iran officials heading to Switzerland for nuclear talks amid Lebanon ceasefire and regional diplomacy efforts

US-Iran Talks: Nuclear negotiations to begin in Switzerland after Lebanon ceasefire restores diplomatic momentum

A US-Iran Talks process is set to begin in Switzerland after a Lebanon ceasefire helped revive stalled diplomacy aimed at turning a fragile interim understanding into a broader regional settlement.

Senior officials from both United States and Iran are expected to arrive in Switzerland for the first round of negotiations, which will focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, enriched uranium stockpiles, sanctions relief and related technical arrangements.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has already departed for the Swiss talks, while Jared Kushner is reported to be present in the resort of Bürgenstock, where preparations for the negotiations have been underway.

JD Vance is also expected to travel to Switzerland, although his earlier visit was postponed amid tensions linked to the fighting in Lebanon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also expected to attend, according to diplomatic sources, as mediators coordinate the start of formal discussions within a 60-day framework set under a recent memorandum of understanding.

The talks were initially delayed due to escalating violence in Lebanon, where clashes between Israel and Hezbollah threatened to derail the emerging diplomatic track. However, a ceasefire agreement has since restored momentum to the negotiations.

A senior US official said the truce took effect at around 4pm local time following intense exchanges of fire. Negotiators from the US and Qatar, with assistance from Iran, were involved in finalising the agreement.

Lebanon’s health authorities reported dozens of casualties during the escalation, while Israel confirmed the deaths of four soldiers in separate incidents inside Lebanese territory.

The upcoming negotiations are expected to concentrate heavily on Iran’s nuclear capabilities, particularly its enriched uranium inventory, alongside sanctions relief mechanisms and financial guarantees outlined in the interim agreement.

The 14-point memorandum of understanding establishes a 60-day framework aimed at halting military activity and laying the groundwork for a comprehensive settlement. It also includes provisions for broader regional de-escalation, including Lebanon.

Iran has insisted that implementation of the ceasefire remains central to progress in the talks, with its foreign ministry warning that responsibility for violations would rest with the United States.

Qatar has also played a mediating role, reaffirming support for diplomacy and urging accelerated negotiations to prevent renewed escalation across the Middle East.

Meanwhile, discussions involving Israel and Lebanon may resume separately in Washington, as the United States pushes parallel diplomatic tracks aimed at stabilising multiple fronts.

Global markets are watching closely, particularly developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy route that was previously disrupted during the conflict before shipments began to recover following the agreement.

The Swiss talks are now seen as a key test of whether the ceasefire and interim understanding can be converted into a durable political framework or remain vulnerable to renewed regional instability.
