US Dollar Holds One-Month High Ahead of Federal Reserve Rate Decision

Dollar remained near a one-month high on Tuesday as investors assessed the possibility of a US Federal Reserve interest rate hike later this week. Although lower oil prices eased inflation concerns, traders continued to focus on the central bank’s upcoming policy decision.

The US Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against major currencies, edged up 0.03% to 101.55. Meanwhile, the euro slipped slightly to $1.1366. The dollar also strengthened against the Japanese yen, rising to 163.82, while the British pound eased to $1.3284.

Oil prices declined after the United States paused military strikes on Iran. As a result, inflation concerns softened. However, US Treasury yields fell only modestly, helping the dollar remain well supported.

Chris Weston, Head of Research at Pepperstone, said limited buying in short-term US Treasury bonds continued to support the US dollar despite broader market movements.

Federal Reserve Meeting in Focus

The Federal Reserve began its two-day monetary policy meeting on Tuesday and will announce its decision on Wednesday. Several major brokerages now believe the risk of a rate hike has increased following higher energy prices and geopolitical tensions earlier this month.

According to CME FedWatch data, markets currently assign a 36.3% probability to a 25-basis-point rate hike this week. That figure has more than doubled from 16% recorded a week ago. Investors also see an 81% chance of a rate increase at the Fed’s September meeting.

Mahjabeen Zaman, Head of FX Research at ANZ Bank, said an unexpected rate hike would likely strengthen the US dollar further, especially against lower-yielding currencies such as the Japanese yen and Swiss franc.

Economic Data to Guide Markets

Later this week, investors will closely monitor second-quarter US GDP figures and the core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation index. Both reports could shape expectations for future Federal Reserve policy.

Global Central Banks Remain Cautious

The Bank of England and the Bank of Japan will also hold policy meetings later this week. Economists expect both central banks to leave interest rates unchanged while maintaining a cautious approach to inflation.

The Japanese yen remained close to its weakest level in four decades against the US dollar. Consequently, analysts expect the Bank of Japan to deliver a firm message on inflation and the currency, even if it keeps interest rates unchanged.

Matthew Ryan, Head of Market Strategy at Ebury, said the Bank of Japan must reinforce its commitment to controlling inflation and supporting the yen to maintain market confidence.

Currencies and Crypto Markets

Elsewhere, the Australian dollar fell 0.11% to $0.6981, while New Zealand’s dollar declined 0.12% to $0.5766. In cryptocurrency markets, Bitcoin dropped 1.88% to $63,694.59, and Ether lost 2.83% to $1,890.30.
