Karachi: The Consulate General of the Republic of Türkiye in Karachi held a solemn ceremony to mark July 15 – Democracy and National Unity Day, commemorating the victims and honoring the heroes who resisted the 2016 coup attempt in Türkiye.

A Dark Chapter in Türkiye’s History

Delivering the keynote address, Consul General Dr. Cemal Sangu described the events of July 15, 2016, as a “dark chapter in our nation’s history,” when a faction within the Turkish military, backed by the Fettulahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), attempted to overthrow the democratically elected government.

“FETÖ, led by Fethullah Gülen, infiltrated state institutions for decades,” he said, calling the group “not only a terrorist organization, but also an espionage network with a cult-like character.”

‘The Name of Democracy is Türkiye’

Recalling the dramatic night, Dr. Sangu highlighted the courage of the Turkish people: “Tanks rolled in, jets roared overhead, but innocent, unarmed civilians stood firm under President Erdoğan’s leadership.”

He stressed that the coup was not just an attack on the government, but an assault on democracy, freedoms, and the Turkish way of life.

Unity, Courage, and Resilience

The Consul General praised the unity shown across the nation: “Regardless of political affiliation, the people came together to defend democratic institutions… The name of solidarity is Türkiye.”

He noted that swift action followed the failed coup, including thousands of arrests and ongoing investigations. “The name of independence is Türkiye,” he said, warning of FETÖ’s continued threat to international communities connected to Türkiye.

Tribute to Martyrs and National Spirit

In conclusion, Dr. Sangu honored the martyrs of July 15 and the founder of modern Türkiye, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. “The name of victory is Türkiye,” he declared, emphasizing that the struggle reaffirmed the power of unity and the resilience of Turkish democracy.
