PSG Paris Saint-Germain Retain UEFA Super Cup with 2-1 Win Over Aston Villa

PSG retained the UEFA Super Cup after beating Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué scoring for the French side.

Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a superb finish. Aston Villa levelled just before half-time through 17-year-old Brian Madjo.

Doué restored PSG’s lead in the 61st minute. Villa pushed for another equaliser but could not break through PSG’s defence.

Kvaratskhelia Breaks the Deadlock

PSG took time to settle into the match before Kvaratskhelia began causing problems for the Villa defence.

The Georgian winger repeatedly found space before finally putting PSG ahead in the 20th minute.

After receiving a pass from Doué inside the penalty area, Kvaratskhelia moved past Matty Cash and fired an unstoppable shot into the net.

Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot had earlier denied Doué.

Madjo Makes History

Madjo, making his Aston Villa debut, created several opportunities before finally finding the net moments before half-time.

At 17 years old, Madjo became the youngest player to score in a UEFA Super Cup.

The forward joined Villa from Metz in January but only became eligible to play last week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld Villa’s appeal against a FIFA ruling.

Doué Seals PSG Victory

Villa created the first major chance after the break, but PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov stopped McGinn’s effort from the edge of the area.

Doué then restored PSG’s advantage in the 61st minute.

The forward raced onto a through ball from Ousmane Dembélé before curling his shot into the far corner.

An initial offside decision ruled out the goal, but VAR overturned the call and awarded PSG the winner.

Villa enjoyed significant possession late in the match, but PSG defended strongly to preserve their lead.

PSG Join Elite Company

The victory made PSG only the third club after AC Milan and Real Madrid to retain the UEFA Super Cup.

Luis Enrique also claimed his 13th trophy since taking charge of PSG in 2023.

For Villa manager Unai Emery, the defeat extended his difficult record in the competition. He has now lost all four of his UEFA Super Cup appearances.

PSG, who defeated Tottenham Hotspur on penalties last year, will next defend the French Super Cup against Lens on Sunday.
