Trump to Visit China for High-Stakes Talks on Iran, Trade and Regional Tensions

Beijing/Washington: Donald J. Trump will visit China from May 13 to 15 for a highly anticipated state visit, Beijing confirmed on Monday, as Washington and Beijing seek to navigate growing tensions over trade, Iran, and regional security issues.

According to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Trump will travel to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The visit is expected to focus heavily on the escalating Middle East crisis, particularly the ongoing tensions involving Iran, as well as efforts to ease strained economic relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump had originally planned to visit China earlier this year but postponed the trip to focus on developments related to the Iran conflict and regional instability in the Middle East.

U.S. officials indicated that Trump is expected to urge Xi Jinping to use China’s influence with Tehran to encourage diplomatic engagement and de-escalation. China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil, particularly through independent refineries that continue importing discounted crude from Iran despite international pressure.

“This will be a visit of tremendous symbolic significance,” said Anna Kelly during a media briefing.

“But President Trump never travels for symbolism alone. The American people can expect the president to deliver more good deals on behalf of our country,” she added.

Relations between Washington and Beijing have remained tense in recent years due to disputes over trade tariffs, technology restrictions, Taiwan, and broader geopolitical competition. China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory, while the United States maintains close unofficial ties with Taipei.

The White House said Trump’s visit will include formal ceremonies, cultural engagements, and high-level diplomatic meetings in Beijing. The itinerary reportedly includes a visit to the historic Temple of Heaven and a state banquet hosted by Xi Jinping.

The trip marks the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to China since 2017 and is being closely watched by global markets and diplomatic observers amid rising international tensions and ongoing concerns over global economic stability.

Analysts believe the outcome of the talks could influence future trade negotiations, energy markets, and diplomatic efforts surrounding the Iran conflict.
