Strait of Hormuz India summons Iranian envoy after seafarer killed in ship attack

Strait of Hormuz tensions escalated on Tuesday after India summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador to protest the killing of an Indian seafarer during attacks on commercial vessels in the strategic waterway.

US Strikes American forces complete new wave of attacks on Iran

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said one Indian national died during the attacks. The ministry added that 10 other Indian seafarers were injured, including two who remain in critical condition.

According to the ministry, the victims were among 46 crew members, including 30 Indians, serving on the vessels MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa when the attacks took place.

India strongly condemned the attacks and urged all sides to stop targeting commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has reinstated a blockade on Iranian shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. He has also proposed a 20% fee for vessels using the waterway under US protection.

However, Iran rejected the proposal. Tehran said the United States has no authority over the future of the Strait of Hormuz, which handled about one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments before the conflict began on February 28.

Separately, Indian authorities said another Indian national remains missing after an attack on the container ship GFS Galaxy in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday.

Iran said it targeted the vessel after it attempted to pass through what it described as an unauthorised route despite repeated warnings.
