Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) marked Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day with a series of patriotic activities, including a flag-hoisting ceremony, Azadi Walk and the inauguration of the renovated Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi Library.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai hoisted the national flag at the university and later led the Azadi Walk. He also inaugurated the historic library following its renovation. A cake-cutting ceremony was held as part of the celebrations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sahrai said SMIU holds a special place in Pakistan’s history because several leaders of the independence movement, including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, received their education at the institution.
He described SMIU as a custodian of the country’s historical legacy and said this distinction carried a significant responsibility for the university.

Paying tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the vice chancellor described him as a great world leader who led the struggle for Pakistan’s independence.

Dr. Sahrai highlighted the founder’s principles of Unity, Faith and Discipline, saying the country must return to these principles to achieve progress.
He urged people to renew their commitment to the founder’s vision on Independence Day and play an active role in the country’s development.
The vice chancellor also highlighted the contribution of overseas Pakistanis to the national economy and called on citizens to contribute more actively to Pakistan’s progress.
Call for Higher Education Investment
Dr. Sahrai also paid tribute to Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi, the founder of Sindh Madressatul Islam, and acknowledged the institution’s contribution to producing generations of Pakistani leadership.
He appreciated Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for supporting higher education in the province. According to Dr. Sahrai, increased provincial funding has helped major universities continue their operations despite financial challenges.
He called for greater investment in education from primary schools to universities, stressing that Pakistan’s progress depends on the development of its education sector.
Students Honoured
Deans Dr. Jamshed Adil Halepoto and Dr. Stephen John, along with Senior Manager Directorate of Students’ Affairs Dr. Qurratulain Memon, also addressed the ceremony.
Dr. Qurratulain presented a report on programmes SMIU organized from August 1 to August 14 as part of the Independence Day celebrations. Students also performed patriotic songs during the event.
The vice chancellor presented certificates of recognition and trophies to students who excelled in various Independence Day programmes and sports events.
Faculty members, deans, heads of academic and administrative departments, officers, staff and students attended the celebrations.
