SMIU Marks 142 Years of Sindh Madressatul Islam’s Educational Legacy

Sindh Madressatul Islam marked its 142nd Foundation Day on Tuesday with an exhibition, speeches, student performances and a tribute to its historic contribution to education in the region.

The celebrations took place at Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) on September 1, 2026. Provincial Minister for Universities and Boards Muhammad Ismail Rahoo inaugurated the programme by opening an exhibition documenting the institution’s history.

SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai briefed the minister about important events, achievements and milestones featured in the exhibition.

Minister praises SMI’s historic role

Speaking at the main ceremony at the Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Auditorium, Mr Rahoo described the institution’s 142-year journey as a source of pride.

He said the institution had made an unforgettable contribution to education and continued to evolve with changing academic needs.

“This journey spanning 142 years—from September 1, 1885, to September 1, 2026—is no ordinary feat,” he said.

The minister praised SMI for combining quality education, research and modern knowledge while maintaining its historical identity.

Jinnah among distinguished alumni

Mr Rahoo highlighted the institution’s connection with several prominent figures in the history of the subcontinent.

He particularly mentioned Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who studied at Sindh Madressatul Islam.

He also referred to Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto, Sir Abdullah Haroon, Sir Ghulam Hussain Hidayatullah and Muhammad Ayub Khuhro among its notable alumni.

The minister said these figures and thousands of other students contributed to the Pakistan Movement and played important roles in the creation of Pakistan.

He described SMI’s legacy as unique among educational institutions in the subcontinent.

SMIU announces research centre

Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai thanked the minister and other guests for attending the Foundation Day ceremony.

He paid tribute to Hassanally Effendi, who founded Sindh Madressatul Islam in 1885.

Dr Sahrai said Effendi’s decision to establish the institution reflected his commitment to education and his vision for the future.

He also highlighted the institution’s distinguished alumni, with Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah among its most prominent former students.

The vice chancellor announced plans to establish the Hassanally Effendi Research Center at SMIU.

The centre will include the Hassanally Effendi Chair and support research and executive training programmes.

Hassanally Effendi Award planned

Dr Sahrai also announced the upcoming Hassanally Effendi Award.

The university will present the award to an outstanding teacher, officer, researcher and student.

He praised SMIU’s faculty and staff for their contribution to the institution’s development.

He also acknowledged Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for supporting the university and its continued progress.

Students showcase SMI’s legacy

The Foundation Day programme also featured speeches from SMIU Assistant Professor Wafa Mansoor Buriro, SMI alumnus Waseem Hashmi and students.

They discussed the institution’s role in promoting modern education.

Students from the SMIU Model School presented a tableau during the ceremony.

Organisers also screened short documentaries featuring employees and alumni reflecting on their experiences and the institution’s legacy.

The celebrations concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony attended by Minister Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai and other university officials.

Ms Zonaira Jalali, Manager DSA, conducted the proceedings.
