150-Year-Old Historic Banyan Tree in Karachi Restored

Staff Reporter

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has praised the successful restoration of a 150-year-old banyan tree in Karachi, calling it a “significant step in climate conservation” and a “symbol of the bond between past and present.”

The historic tree, located at Qasr-e-Naz, Club Road, had collapsed during recent monsoon rains due to strong winds. A two-day rescue operation led by the Sindh Forest Department revived and replanted the banyan tree, giving it a new lease on life.

According to a technical report by Chief Conservator Javed Mahar, the tree’s roots were weakened by fungal and termite infestation caused by water deficiency. Using heavy cranes, the massive tree was carefully relocated to a nearby suitable site.

The operation also ensured the preservation of nearby neem and kamini trees, which were replanted at better locations to safeguard the area’s biodiversity.

CM Murad Ali Shah commended the Forest Department’s efforts and urged the youth to value and protect historical trees, describing them as “living symbols of heritage and environmental resilience.”

“This revival is not only about saving a tree — it is about safeguarding history and contributing to a greener, healthier future,” he said.
