Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Saturday hailed the signing of landmark agreements for Education City Karachi, declaring it a “historic milestone” for Sindh and Pakistan. The initiative will pave the way for the establishment of the country’s largest Special Technology Zone (STZ), alongside major foreign investment in renewable energy and advanced energy storage solutions.
The signing ceremony at CM House was attended by Energy Minister Syed Nasir Shah, Chairman Education City Board Dr. Asim Hussain, Special Assistant to CM Syed Qasim Naveed, PSCM Agha Wasif, Chairman STZA Azfra Manzoor, Secretary Investment Khurram Shahzad, PD Education City Abrar Ahmad, and senior executives from Switzerland-based Meeco AG, including Mr. Jo Hanns Dieter Trutschler and Mr. Axel Kaiser.
Special Technology Zone at Education City
The 435-acre Special Technology Zone will be the first of its kind under the Sindh government. Designed as a hub of innovation, entrepreneurship, and knowledge-driven economic growth, the STZ will integrate digitally with STZA’s central e-portal for streamlined licensing, approvals, and investor facilitation.
Renewable Energy Partnership with Meeco AG
Global clean energy leader Meeco AG has partnered with the Sindh government to establish a renewable energy plant powered by wind, solar, and battery storage technologies to meet Education City’s energy needs. Electricity will be supplied at $0.11/kWh for the first 10 years—competitive with existing providers—along with a 4% royalty for Education City. The tariff will decline after the first decade, ensuring long-term sustainability.
€100 Million FDI in Energy Storage Manufacturing
In a major breakthrough, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Meeco AG to establish a state-of-the-art energy storage manufacturing facility within Education City STZ. Backed by an estimated €100 million in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), the plant will produce advanced storage modules for domestic use and international exports. The project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs, boost technology transfer, and position Pakistan in the global clean energy supply chain.
A Vision for Pakistan’s Future
Calling Education City “a vision for Pakistan’s future,” CM Murad Ali Shah said the integration of education, technology, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing will create a thriving ecosystem driving sustainable growth and global competitiveness. He credited PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for making innovation and inclusion central to Sindh’s development agenda.
“I want Education City to be not just the pride of Sindh but a shining example of Pakistan’s progress in the world,” the CM concluded.
The MoU was signed by Director Education City Abrar Shaikh and Mr. Jo Hanns Dieter Trutschler, President of Meeco AG/Meeco Holding.
