Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah declared the cancellation of the controversial Cholistan Canal project as a significant victory for Sindh, emphasizing that it represents a triumph of constitutional justice. The CM made these remarks while addressing jubilant party workers at the Old Terminal following a crucial meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

Shah explained that the controversial Cholistan Canal project, which was approved during the caretaker government, was rejected through a democratic and legal process. He thanked President Asif Ali Zardari, the federal government, and the people of Sindh for their collective efforts in opposing the project.

“We stand united to protect the rights of the people of Sindh. Any attempt to undermine the interests of our province will be met with strong resistance,” Shah stated.

Challenging the Canal Project

The CM further elaborated on the actions taken by the Sindh government, particularly the role of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership, in contesting the project. He highlighted that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari led rallies in Garhi Khuda Bux, Hyderabad, and Sukkur to raise awareness on the issue.

He also shared details of the CCI meeting, where it was decided to annul the IRSA certification issued on January 17, 2024, which authorized the Cholistan Canal project. The CCI’s decision to cancel the project was a significant step, with the CM praising the support of the prime minister and the CCI members.

A Unified Front for Sindh’s Rights

Murad Shah praised Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his steadfast leadership and his refusal to back down from a just cause. He expressed gratitude to all the provinces for their support, particularly in upholding the 1991 Water Accord, and called the CCI’s decision a victory for the people of Sindh.

The chief minister also took the opportunity to respond to detractors, stating that the misinformation and propaganda surrounding the project were unfounded. He clarified that neither the president nor the prime minister signs off on projects, as these decisions come from forums like ECNEC and CCI.

Future of Canal Projects in Pakistan

Looking ahead, the CCI has made it clear that no new canal projects will proceed without interprovincial consensus. This decision reinforces the importance of unity and collaboration among the provinces for the greater good of Pakistan.

Murad Shah concluded his speech by reaffirming his commitment to upholding the legacy of PPP’s founding leaders, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto. He vowed to continue fighting for the rights of the people of Sindh, ensuring that their voices are heard at the highest levels of government.
