Sindh Cabinet Sets 90-Day Deadline for Karachi BRT Red Line Work

FWO Assigned Fast-Track Construction on University Road Corridor

Murad Ali Shah-led Sindh Cabinet has approved a 90-day deadline for the completion of mixed traffic lanes, underpasses, elevated structures, and drainage infrastructure along Karachi’s University Road under the long-delayed BRT Red Line project.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister, where authorities also approved emergency off-budget funding for Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to accelerate construction work and provide immediate relief to commuters facing severe traffic disruptions.

FWO Takes Over Delayed Red Line Section

According to the official statement, the Transport and Mass Transit Department proposed urgent measures to revive the stalled project after the previous joint venture contractor was removed over persistent delays and non-compliance.

Under the new arrangement, FWO has been tasked with executing priority works on the 12.85-kilometre Lot-2 corridor stretching from Numaish Chowrangi to Mosamiyat.

Heavy machinery and construction teams have already been deployed at multiple locations along University Road to restore traffic flow and speed up development activities.

Cabinet Approves Emergency Funding

The cabinet also approved emergency financial support for TransKarachi to ensure rapid mobilisation of resources for the project.

Officials said the accelerated work includes road rehabilitation, drainage improvements, elevated sections, and underpasses aimed at easing congestion on one of Karachi’s busiest arteries.

Education and TVET Reforms Also Approved

Besides transport infrastructure decisions, the Sindh Cabinet approved several higher education and technical training reforms, including the STEVTA Amendment Bill 2026, making registration mandatory for all public and private TVET institutions.

The cabinet further approved amendments related to universities and the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Human Resource Research and Development Board to strengthen governance and improve institutional oversight.
