New York: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly session in New York, where he stressed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and raised key regional and global issues, including Kashmir, Gaza, and climate change.

Sharif appreciated Guterres’ leadership in promoting global peace and strengthening the role of developing nations within the UN framework. He highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, urging urgent international action and mobilization of climate finance to assist hard-hit countries.

The Prime Minister also drew attention to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, alleged violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, and externally sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. He called for a just settlement of the Kashmir issue in line with UN Security Council resolutions and praised Guterres’ role in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India.

Turning to the Middle East, Sharif voiced grave concern over the Gaza conflict, reiterating Pakistan’s support for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, and a path toward Palestinian statehood.

Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to contributing constructively as a UN Security Council member for regional and global peace. The Secretary-General commended Pakistan’s principled positions at the UN and its continued engagement in advancing international stability.

Both sides agreed on the need to further strengthen the United Nations’ central role in addressing global challenges.
