Islamabad: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) formally presented its charter of demands to the government during the third round of negotiations on Thursday. The meeting, overseen by the National Assembly (NA) speaker, was attended by opposition and government representatives.

COAS Meeting Highlights Political Stability

In a parallel development, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir in Peshawar. The meeting addressed political and security concerns and was hailed as a positive step toward national stability.

Barrister Gohar emphasized that the meeting was in line with PTI founder Imran Khan’s directives. He reaffirmed the party’s openness to dialogue, highlighting its primary demands, including judicial commissions to probe key incidents.

PTI’s Charter of Demands

During Thursday’s negotiations, PTI submitted a three-page document outlining two key demands:

  1. Formation of two judicial commissions to investigate May 9 riots and November 24–27 incidents.
  2. Support from federal and provincial governments for bail and sentence suspension of political prisoners linked to these events.

The document stressed the necessity of judicial commissions led by Supreme Court judges to ensure transparency.

Heated Exchange Over Counterterrorism Funds

The Peshawar meeting was marred by tensions as CM Gandapur and Governor Faisal Karim Kundi clashed over the allocation of Rs500 billion for counterterrorism efforts. ANP leader Aimal Wali Khan accused the provincial government of harboring Taliban elements, which Gandapur denied.

NA Speaker Calls for Economic and Security Committees

NA Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf proposed forming committees to address economic and terrorism issues. He expressed optimism about the ongoing dialogue, noting efforts to unite both sides on pressing national matters.

Judicial Commissions: A Prerequisite for Progress

The PTI demanded inquiries into several incidents, including:

  • Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9, 2023, and subsequent nationwide unrest.
  • The use of force during the November 24–27 protests in Islamabad.
  • Alleged media censorship and internet shutdowns.

The party stressed that failure to form commissions would halt negotiations.

Imran Khan’s Directives

Barrister Gohar reiterated that future updates on party negotiations would follow Imran Khan’s explicit instructions. Gohar described the COAS meeting as pivotal for the country’s political and security stability.

The PTI remains hopeful that continued dialogue will address national challenges and foster unity across political divides.
