Pakistan’s economy, Federal Parliamentary Secretary

Karachi: Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Finance and Revenue, Saad Waseem Sheikh, inaugurated the newly renovated Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) South Zone office. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including PTA Central Chairman Hamid Zahur, South Zone Chairman Danish Aman, Vice Chairman Yousuf Shafiq, and other distinguished guests.
Speaking at the event, Saad Waseem Sheikh emphasized the pivotal role of the business community in strengthening the country’s economy. He stated:
“The business community is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. The government is committed to addressing their challenges, implementing measures to ensure economic growth, and providing necessary facilities to traders and industrialists.”
He also highlighted the government’s focus on economic development, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign debt and achieve self-sufficiency.
Leather Industry: A Key Contributor to Pakistan’s Economy
PTA Central Chairman Hamid Zahur shed light on the significant role of the leather industry, noting its contribution to economic stability. He revealed that Pakistan produces approximately 47.4 million hides annually, making tanners an essential part of the country’s economic framework.
South Zone Chairman Danish Aman highlighted the leather industry as Pakistan’s third-largest sector, underscoring its export potential. He stated:
“Modern facilities in cities like Karachi, Sialkot, Lahore, and Multan have enabled Pakistan to produce high-quality leather goods, recognized globally. Over 90% of leather goods are manufactured in Karachi and Sialkot.”
Global Recognition and Export Markets
Danish Aman also highlighted Pakistan’s position as a leading exporter of leather garments and products. Major importing countries include:
- Italy, Germany, France, USA, and the UK.
- Emerging markets such as Japan, South Korea, and Australia.
He noted that PTA is actively working to address challenges faced by the industry and enhance exports with stakeholder collaboration.
Promoting Growth in the Leather Sector
Danish Aman further stated that the Pakistan Tanners Association is committed to supporting the leather industry by fostering innovation and tackling key challenges. He expressed confidence in the sector’s potential for rapid growth, emphasizing the role of registered tanners across cities like Kasur, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad.
“The leather industry holds immense potential for stabilizing Pakistan’s economy. With continued efforts, it can contribute even more to the nation’s economic development,” he concluded.
