Photography: World Photography Day Celebrated at French Cultural Centre in Karachi

KARACHI: Photography is more than the art of capturing images; it preserves moments, emotions and history for future generations. The French Cultural Centre in Karachi marked World Photography Day with a special event featuring an exhibition of photographs by Professor Rahmatullah Khan and his students from the centre’s photography course.

Speaking at the event, Professor Rahmatullah Khan said photography had evolved significantly since its early days, particularly with advances in technology. He noted that the digital era had made photography more accessible and created new opportunities for creativity.

However, he said, a compelling photograph still required keen observation, creative thinking and the ability to capture the right moment.

Emmanuel Breurec, Director of the French Cultural Centre, said photography transcended language and geographical boundaries and could communicate emotions and stories universally.

He said the French Cultural Centre remained committed to promoting photography and other art forms while creating opportunities for young and emerging artists to showcase their work.

Breurec formally inaugurated the exhibition by cutting the ribbon alongside Professor Rahmatullah Khan. Organisers also held a cake-cutting ceremony to commemorate World Photography Day.

A major highlight of the event was a commemorative shield presented to senior Karachi photojournalist Shakil Adil in recognition of more than four decades of outstanding contributions to photojournalism.

The gathering paid tribute to Adil’s long-standing contribution to journalism and photography, acknowledging his role in documenting Karachi and its people through his work.

A large number of photographers, photojournalists, artists, students and photography enthusiasts attended the event. Participants praised the exhibition and said initiatives of this kind can encourage young photographers and strengthen photography as an art form in Karachi.
