Pakistan Debt has reached nearly Rs84 trillion, with the country’s total debt rising 7.4% year-on-year by June 2026, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan.
The State Bank reported that total debt stood at Rs83,642 billion in June 2026. The figure compares with Rs77,888 billion in June 2025.
Total debt also increased from Rs81,955 billion recorded in May 2026.
Domestic Debt Rises 9.1%
According to the latest data, the federal government’s domestic debt rose 9.1% year-on-year.
It reached Rs59,441 billion by June 2026.

Meanwhile, the government’s external debt increased by 3.3% during the same period.
The external debt stood at Rs24,201 billion in June.
The figures show that domestic borrowing continues to account for the larger share of the federal government’s overall debt.
Experts Warn of Debt Trap
The continued rise in Pakistan’s debt burden has raised concerns among economic experts.
Experts have warned that growing debt could push the economy towards a “debt trap” if borrowing continues to increase without stronger economic growth and fiscal management.
The latest State Bank figures highlight the pressure facing Pakistan as the government manages rising debt obligations and seeks to maintain economic stability.
