Pakistan and China Strengthen Counter-Terrorism and Multi-Sector Cooperation

Beijing: Pakistan and China have agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts, defense, agriculture, information technology, and several other sectors. This commitment was outlined following a visit by President Asif Ali Zardari to China, where he met with key Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Zhao Leji. The visit underscored the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.

Counter-Terrorism and Security Cooperation

A joint statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) reiterated the country’s firm stance against terrorism, condemning recent terrorist attacks involving Chinese personnel. Pakistan reaffirmed its responsibility to ensure the safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects, and institutions. Both sides vowed to intensify efforts in countering terrorism and strengthening bilateral and multilateral security cooperation.

Commitment to Regional and Global Stability

Both countries expressed strong mutual support on key regional and global issues. Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China principle, underscoring its opposition to Taiwan independence, as well as its support for China’s stance on Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong, and the South China Sea. In turn, China expressed its unwavering support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security.

Bilateral Agreements and Strategic Cooperation

During the visit, Pakistan and China signed over a dozen agreements covering diverse areas such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), trade, science, technology, and media. Both sides committed to further enhancing collaboration under CPEC, with a focus on economic development, infrastructure, and energy projects.

Advancing Infrastructure and Economic Ties

The two countries also agreed to accelerate cooperation on key infrastructure projects, including the upgradation of Pakistan’s railway network and the development of Gwadar Port. They outlined plans for Chinese companies to invest in Pakistan’s offshore oil and gas sectors, reinforcing their commitment to boosting bilateral trade and connectivity.

Support for Sustainable Development and People’s Welfare

The two nations highlighted the importance of improving people-to-people ties. They discussed expanding cooperation in education, healthcare, agriculture, and climate response. Pakistan expressed its gratitude for China’s contributions to the country’s national development, including health initiatives such as the treatment of congenital heart diseases and health kits distribution.

Focus on High-Quality Development and Innovation

Both Pakistan and China agreed to prioritize high-quality development in areas such as artificial intelligence, big data, and innovation. They discussed efforts to build an “innovation corridor” to foster economic growth through technological advancements.

Regional Peace and Stability

On regional matters, Pakistan and China emphasized the importance of peace and stability in South Asia and expressed support for resolving disputes through dialogue. The two countries reiterated their commitment to fostering stability in Afghanistan and voiced support for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

China’s Continued Support for Pakistan

Pakistan recognized China’s pivotal role in supporting its economy, particularly through investments in CPEC and other major projects. The two sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to furthering economic cooperation and strengthening ties in various sectors.

The cooperation between Pakistan and China continues to evolve, with a focus on mutual benefit and strategic partnership, playing a significant role in the region’s peace and stability.
