Karachi: PPP Senator Sarmad Ali voiced concerns about the spread of misinformation in Pakistan, asserting that “99% of fake news is presented as gospel truth.” Speaking at a workshop organized by the Women Media Center in Karachi, he emphasized that social media has eroded personal dignity, with misinformation becoming widespread across political parties, a trend he attributed to one political party in particular.
As Secretary General of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society, Senator Ali was the chief guest on the workshop’s final day. Reflecting on the integrity of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, he noted, “Bhutto shaheed went to the gallows but did not reveal any national secrets, including nuclear information he possessed.” He also criticized the previous government for its lack of representation at Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan’s funeral, highlighting that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah was the only official in attendance.
Addressing the effects of artificial intelligence, Senator Ali expressed concern over AI’s impact on critical thinking. “People have stopped reading books and newspapers, relying on Google and ChatGPT for knowledge. This reliance has significantly diminished the need for critical thinking,” he remarked.
The workshop saw participation from women journalists and media students, concluding with a certificate distribution ceremony to honor the attendees’ commitment to advancing media literacy and professionalism in Pakistan.
