Brazil controlled possession during the opening stages and created several chances. Matheus Cunha forced goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into an early save, while Vinicius Junior remained a constant threat.
Despite Brazil’s bright start, Japan took the lead in the 29th minute. Danilo misplaced a pass, allowing Sano to win possession near midfield. The midfielder drove forward confidently and finished past Alisson for his first international goal.
The goal boosted Japan’s confidence and silenced many Brazil supporters inside the stadium.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti introduced Endrick at half-time after Lucas Paqueta left the field with an injury.
Brazil increased the pressure immediately after the restart. Japan defender Takehiro Tomiyasu made two crucial goal-line interventions before Casemiro finally equalised. The experienced midfielder headed home from Gabriel’s cross in the 56th minute.
Vinicius then came close to giving Brazil the lead, but Suzuki pushed his effort onto the post.
Brazil dominated the closing stages as Japan defended deep.
Their persistence paid off in the fifth minute of added time. Martinelli found space inside the penalty area and fired home the winning goal to send Brazil into the knockout stage.
Brazil will now face either the Ivory Coast or Norway in the last 16 in New Jersey.
