Marine Pollution in Karachi Rises Due to Plastic Waste at Sea

By: Zahid H. Karani

Karachi: Marine pollution along the coastal belt of Karachi is rising at an alarming rate, with plastic waste from fishing activities emerging as a major environmental concern, according to the Coastal Media Center Ibrahim Hyderi.

Fishing Practices Under Scrutiny

Reports indicate that large fishing launches, locally referred to as “launch ka gaja,” are carrying thousands of kilograms of plastic shopping bags into the sea. These bags are used to store fish, including species such as “Mian fish,” before being transported to Ibrahim Hyderi and other jetties across the city.

After unloading the catch, the plastic bags are routinely discarded back into the sea, significantly contributing to marine pollution.

Threat to Marine Ecosystem

Environmental experts warn that these plastic bags often sink into deeper waters, posing a serious threat to marine life, including fish, shrimp, and other aquatic species. The accumulation of plastic waste is disrupting the ecological balance and increasing the risk of long-term environmental damage.

Fishermen Demand Immediate Action

Local fishermen have urged the Government of Sindh to impose an immediate ban on the use and disposal of plastic bags at sea. They stress that urgent measures are needed to protect marine biodiversity and safeguard the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Call for Government Intervention

Kamal Shah, President of the Coastal Media Center Ibrahim Hyderi, has called on authorities to take swift and effective action. He emphasized that protecting marine resources is essential not only for environmental sustainability but also for the economic well-being of millions وابسته to the fisheries sector.
