Karachi: The launch of the India North Europe Express (INX) maritime service marks a major milestone for Pakistan’s trade and shipping sectors. The service, with its first departure scheduled for February 5th from Karachi, establishes a direct shipping route from Western India to Northern Europe, enhancing regional trade connectivity.

Strategic Maritime Importance

Speaking at the launch event, Vice Admiral Faisal Abbasi HI (M), SI (M), Commander Karachi of the Pakistan Navy, highlighted Pakistan’s geostrategic maritime significance. He emphasized that Pakistan’s location serves as a gateway to Central Asia, South West Asia, and the Persian Gulf—regions crucial to international trade. Abbasi underscored the importance of sea lines of communication (SLOCs), noting that 75% of global trade relies on maritime routes.

Enhanced Connectivity and Trade Opportunities

The INX service is operated by United Marine Agencies (UMA) in partnership with Ocean Network Express (ONE). The service features 6,000 TEU container ships with an 11-week rotation, connecting Karachi to key ports, including:

  • Hazira
  • Mundra
  • Nhava Sheva
  • Colombo
  • London Gateway
  • Rotterdam
  • Hamburg
  • Antwerp

This extensive network promises to streamline supply chains, reduce transit times, and bolster trade flows across the region.

Transformative Economic Impact

UMA CEO Sohail Shams called the initiative a transformative step for regional trade and global transshipment, positioning Karachi as a vital trade hub. Yang Jungmo, Commercial Chief of HMM, echoed this, highlighting the economic benefits of the INX service, including improved connectivity and enhanced regional growth.

The INX maritime service is set to play a pivotal role in advancing Pakistan’s position in international commerce, making Karachi a key player in global trade networks.
