Karacbhi: The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, visited Pakistan’s ship breaking facility, marking significant developments in the sector. He laid the foundation stone for a hospital dedicated to ship breakers and inaugurated an industrial wastewater treatment plant. Mr. Dominguez was accompanied by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh, along with the Chairman of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), the Chairman of the Balochistan Development Authority, and other officials.
During his visit, Mr. Dominguez emphasized the importance of maintaining strict safety standards while breaking and recycling ships. He highlighted the need to protect workers, the environment, and the local ecosystem, urging stakeholders in the ship-breaking industry to adhere to international safety protocols.
Mr. Dominguez also expressed satisfaction with Pakistan’s compliance with the Hong Kong Convention, an international treaty ensuring safe and environmentally sound ship recycling. He acknowledged Pakistan’s potential in the ship-breaking industry and hinted at further visits to explore opportunities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh, reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting Balochistan’s development. He announced that 50% of the government’s imports will now be routed through Gwadar Port, creating new job opportunities for the people of Balochistan. He also assured his continued support for the ship-breaking industry and its growth in the region.
