Javed Sheikh I Didn’t Want to Take Payment for Om Shanti Om, Says Veteran Actor

Javed Sheikh has revealed that he initially refused payment for his role in the 2007 Bollywood blockbuster Om Shanti Om. He said it was an honour to portray Shah Rukh Khan’s father in the film.

Speaking in a recent interview, Sheikh recalled his experience on the film’s set. He praised Shah Rukh Khan and director Farah Khan for treating him with warmth and respect throughout the production.

He said he developed a close friendship with Shah Rukh during filming. Moreover, he appreciated the support and hospitality he received.

Why Javed Sheikh Refused Payment

Discussing his remuneration, Sheikh said he did not want to accept any payment. He explained that being selected as a Pakistani actor for such a high-profile Bollywood film was a matter of pride. He even suggested accepting just one rupee as a symbolic fee.

However, Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan rejected the proposal. Instead, they insisted on paying him a proper fee as a mark of respect.

Career Struggles Before Success

Sheikh also reflected on the struggles he faced before achieving success. He said his father strongly opposed his ambition to become an actor. As a result, he often criticised his decision to pursue a career in showbiz.

Despite his father’s objections, Sheikh secretly visited Radio Pakistan because he loved performing. He recalled that his father once tore one of his shirts after accusing him of wanting to become a film hero.

Later, his father celebrated his achievements. However, he became disappointed whenever Sheikh’s films failed at the box office. To support his family, Sheikh worked other jobs while continuing his acting career.

After his debut film Dhamaka (1974) failed, Sheikh endured several difficult years. Later, producers of Bivi Ho To Aisi even considered replacing him. They feared his earlier commercial failures would affect the film’s business. Sheikh said the experience left him heartbroken.

‘Ankahi’ Changed His Career

Eventually, Sheikh’s fortunes changed with the television drama Ankahi. The drama earned him widespread recognition in both Pakistan and India.

Looking back on his journey, Sheikh said he always focused on improving himself. Instead of comparing himself with others, he remained committed to hard work. He added that he never allowed jealousy to influence his career.
