An Israeli attempt to kill senior Hamas figure Ali al-Amoudi in an airstrike on Gaza City likely failed, according to Israeli military assessments reported by Army Radio.
Army Radio said assessments were leaning toward the failure of the operation. Israel’s Channel 12 also reported that authorities had not obtained confirmation that al-Amoudi was killed.
The Israeli military confirmed that it had targeted al-Amoudi during an overnight strike in Gaza City. It said the results remained under review.
Five Palestinians Reported Killed
Palestinian health and civil defence officials said the strike killed at least five people. Four of the victims were women.
The strike hit an apartment building in western Gaza City. Reuters reported that the victims included a mother and her daughter. The agency said it remained unclear whether the Israeli military strike was the same attack that killed the five Palestinians.

Al-Amoudi was not listed among the reported fatalities.
The Israeli military said the strike targeted al-Amoudi while he was staying in an apartment inside a residential building. It described the apartment as being used for what it called terrorist activity and said measures were taken to reduce civilian harm.
Al-Amoudi’s Role in Hamas
Israeli and Palestinian sources have described al-Amoudi as a senior Hamas political figure and the group’s de facto leader in Gaza.
Israeli reports said he became a key figure following the deaths of Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Rawhi Mushtaha in 2024. He was later reported to have taken charge of Hamas operations in Gaza while the movement considered its next leadership arrangements.
Israeli reports also described him as a former close associate of Sinwar. The Israeli military said he had been involved in Hamas decision-making and described him as its most senior figure in the Gaza Strip.
The reports about his current position differ in some details. Israeli media have described him as a leading candidate for a formal leadership role in Gaza.
Ceasefire Under Strain
The strike came amid continuing violence despite a ceasefire that has been in place since October 2025.
Gaza health officials said Israeli violations since the ceasefire had killed 1,439 Palestinians and injured 5,052 others as of Thursday, according to figures cited in the reports.
Palestinian authorities have reported more than 74,000 Palestinian deaths and over 175,000 injuries in Gaza since the war began in October 2023.
The figures have not been independently verified in full, and the parties continue to dispute responsibility for violations of the ceasefire.
