Instagram Introduces Major Teen Safety Upgrade in Pakistan, Aligns Content Controls with 13+ Movie Rating Standards

May 8, 2026

Instagram has announced a major overhaul of its Teen Accounts, introducing stronger safety protections for users under 18 in Pakistan and giving parents greater control over their teens’ online experience.

The updated system is designed around 13+ movie rating standards and extensive parent feedback, aiming to ensure that teens are primarily exposed to age-appropriate content similar to what they might see in a film rated for viewers aged 13 and above.

Under the new policy, all users under 18 will automatically be placed into an enhanced “13+ setting” and will not be able to opt out without parental approval. For families seeking stricter supervision, Instagram is also introducing a new “Limited Content” mode, which further restricts content visibility and removes the ability for teens to comment on posts.

The update represents the platform’s most significant change since the introduction of Teen Accounts last year and builds on existing protections that already apply to hundreds of millions of teenage users globally. The rollout first began in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada in October 2025, and is now expanding to Pakistan.

Instagram stated that while teens may still occasionally encounter mild suggestive language or content—similar to what appears in a 13+ rated movie—the platform will actively work to minimize such instances.

As part of the expanded safeguards, Instagram will now restrict teens from following accounts that regularly post age-inappropriate content or appear unsuitable based on profile details. Search results for sensitive or mature topics such as alcohol or violent content will also be further limited, even correcting misspellings to prevent exposure.

Additionally, content recommendations across Explore, Reels, Feed, Stories, and comments will be tightly filtered to ensure compliance with updated safety standards. Even content shared by followed accounts may be restricted if it violates guidelines, and links to such material sent via direct messages will be blocked.

Meta has also extended these protections to AI interactions, ensuring that AI-generated responses remain appropriate for users under 18.

The new “Limited Content” mode offers even stricter controls, including disabling comments entirely and further narrowing content visibility, providing parents with an additional layer of oversight.

These changes are also being extended to Facebook and Messenger Teen Accounts, with users in Pakistan set to be automatically enrolled in the updated 13+ setting this week, while the stricter mode will roll out later this year.

Instagram clarified that while the update draws inspiration from publicly available 13+ movie rating principles, it is not formally affiliated with any film rating authority and operates independently through its own moderation systems.
