Karachi: The 12th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2024, a four-day multinational arms showcase, commenced at Karachi’s Expo Centre under heightened security measures. Organized by Pakistan’s Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO).
Pakistan is showcasing its domestically developed Haider Main Battle Tank (MBT) and the Shahpar III drone, among other innovations like Al-Khalid and Al-Zarrar tanks and the latest Super Mushshak Aircraft model. Developed in collaboration with China’s NORINCO, the Haider tank reflects Pakistan’s growing self-reliance in military production.
This year’s exhibition features exhibitors and delegations from 55 countries, including the US, China, Russia, Iran, Italy, the UK, and Azerbaijan. Türkiye leads with the largest contingent of 75 exhibitors, representing major firms such as STM, Roketsan, Meteksan, and Havelsan. China follows closely as the second-largest participant.
Iran and Italy are participating for the first time, underscoring IDEAS 2024’s expanding global appeal. A dedicated start-up pavilion highlights advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and defense technologies, spearheaded by NUST, the Pakistan Navy Maritime Science and Technology Park, and the National Aerospace and Technology Park.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif inaugurated the event, emphasizing the potential of Pakistan’s booming defense industry to contribute to national growth through public-private collaboration. An international seminar titled “Pakistan Defense Production Potential – Challenges, Opportunities, and Way Forward” will feature leading experts presenting strategic insights on day three.
With 560 exhibitors, 333 of them international, IDEAS 2024 aims to strengthen global partnerships and promote Pakistan as a key player in the global defense industry. The exhibition is expected to provide a platform for business and innovation while reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to technological advancement in the defense sector.
This biennial mega-event remains a cornerstone of regional defense cooperation, fostering collaboration among global defense leaders.
