Heatwave: Europe heatwave claims lives as record temperatures sweep across continent

A heatwave has intensified across Europe, killing at least 18 people in France, as record-breaking temperatures forced school closures, emergency alerts and widespread disruption. Authorities have warned that conditions may worsen further in the coming days as much of the continent remains under extreme heat warnings.

Severe heat has been recorded across several countries, including Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom, where officials have issued public health advisories and upgraded weather alerts. Temperatures have been described by meteorologists as unusually high for this time of year, and additional increases have been forecast.

In France, daily life has been heavily disrupted. Schools in several regions were closed or had schedules adjusted after authorities issued red alerts in affected areas. Emergency services have been placed under pressure, and public infrastructure has been strained by increased demand for cooling and medical assistance. Residents have been urged by officials to remain hydrated and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun.

In Bordeaux, temperatures reached 41.9°C, setting a new local record, while Poitiers recorded 41.2°C, breaking a long-standing record dating back to 1947. Paris may also experience its hottest June day on record, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could reach 38.4°C.

Several fatalities have been reported. Among them, two young children aged two and four died in Carpentras after being left inside a vehicle during extreme heat. Three elderly residents, aged between 80 and 95, also died in the Bordeaux region due to heat-related complications over the weekend.

A rise in water-related incidents has also been reported as people attempted to escape the heat. Thirteen drowning deaths were recorded between Sunday and Monday, as more residents visited lakes, rivers, and beaches. The civil protection agency said drowning incidents had increased sharply during extreme heat periods, with a rise of 172% during the previous year’s heatwave.

Britain is also preparing for a four-day spell of extreme heat that could challenge national records. Officials have warned that health services may face increased pressure if temperatures continue to rise.

Authorities across Europe continue to monitor the situation, with additional alerts expected if conditions intensify further.
