France Karachi Consulate: France to close Consulate General in Karachi amid diplomatic restructuring

France Karachi Consulate will close as France restructures its diplomatic presence in Pakistan, the French Consul General announced during Bastille Day celebrations in Karachi.

Speaking at the event marking France’s National Day, the Consul General said the French government had decided to close the Consulate General in Karachi after his four-year tenure because of budgetary reasons. However, he stressed that France’s presence in the city would continue through a new diplomatic framework.

The envoy described the move as a transition rather than a withdrawal. Accordingly, France will maintain its engagement through a new Honorary Consul, the Pakistan France Business Alliance (PFBA), and the Alliance Française de Karachi.

Meanwhile, the Consul General reflected on the long-standing friendship between Pakistan and France. He noted that France was among the first countries to recognise Pakistan after its independence in 1947 and said both nations continue to cooperate on regional peace and international stability.

The event also highlighted growing economic cooperation between the two countries. For example, French companies including CMA CGM, Louis Dreyfus Company, Schneider Electric and L’Oréal continue to invest in Pakistan and support local industries.

In addition, the envoy praised the production of the Peugeot 2008 SUV through the Lucky Motors joint venture in Karachi’s Korangi industrial area, calling it a successful example of bilateral industrial cooperation.

The Consul General also recognised the Alliance Française de Karachi, established in 1954, for promoting French language, education and cultural exchanges.

Finally, he reaffirmed that the closure of the consulate would not weaken relations between the two countries. He said the friendship between France and Pakistan would continue to grow through stronger business, cultural and people-to-people connections.
