Elon Musk: AI will surpass combined human intelligence within five years, says billionaire

Tesla and xAI chief predicts rapid advances in artificial intelligence, while experts urge caution over the timeline

Elon Musk has predicted that artificial intelligence will surpass the combined intelligence of all humans within the next four to five years, adding to the growing debate over the future of AI technology.

The billionaire entrepreneur, who leads Tesla and xAI, shared the prediction during a discussion on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The conversation began after entrepreneur and author Peter H. Diamandis argued that human progress depends not only on intelligence but also on access to resources and advanced technology.

Musk responded by saying artificial intelligence is advancing at an extraordinary pace. He predicted that AI could exceed the combined intelligence of humanity within the next four to five years.

The Tesla chief has repeatedly described AI as one of the most transformative technologies in history. At the same time, he has warned that powerful AI systems could pose significant risks if developers fail to manage them responsibly.

In a separate post, Musk outlined his vision of an AI-powered future. He said artificial intelligence and robotics could dramatically increase the production of goods and services while reducing costs across multiple industries.

He also highlighted Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot programme. Musk said Optimus could eventually perform repetitive, dangerous and physically demanding tasks in factories, construction sites, logistics operations and other workplaces.

Many AI experts, however, remain cautious about Musk’s timeline. They acknowledge the rapid progress of artificial intelligence but argue that major scientific and engineering challenges still stand in the way of achieving human-level or superhuman intelligence.

Researchers say current AI systems continue to improve quickly, but predicting when they will surpass human intelligence remains highly uncertain.
