Cristiano Ronaldo: Portugal captain becomes first player to score in six World Cups

Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name into football history on Tuesday by becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups, leading Portugal to a convincing 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in a Group K match at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The 41-year-old Portuguese captain delivered a standout performance, scoring twice as Portugal produced one of their most dominant displays of the tournament. The result strengthened Portugal’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds while pushing Uzbekistan to the brink of elimination.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, netting his first goal of the tournament and setting a new World Cup milestone. Portugal maintained control throughout the opening half and doubled their lead in the 17th minute when Nuno Mendes converted a well-executed free-kick.

The veteran forward struck again in the 39th minute, calmly finishing a flowing move to make it 3-0 before the interval and cap an impressive first-half display from the Portuguese side.

Portugal continued to dominate after the break and frequently looked to create chances for Ronaldo to complete a hat-trick. Despite several opportunities, the record-breaking forward could not add a third goal to his tally.

Any hopes of an Uzbekistan comeback disappeared early in the second half when defender Abduvakhid Nematov turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous corner, extending Portugal’s advantage to four goals.

Portugal remained on the front foot until the closing stages, and substitute Rafael Leao completed the scoring in the 87th minute with a fifth goal.

The victory leaves Portugal national football team in a strong position ahead of its final Group K match against Colombia national football team on 27 June, a fixture that could determine top spot in the group.

For Uzbekistan national football team, the heavy defeat significantly damages qualification hopes, leaving the team reliant on other results to remain in contention.

Ronaldo’s latest achievement adds another chapter to an extraordinary career. Already recognised as international football’s all-time leading goalscorer, the Portuguese star once again demonstrated his ability to perform on the sport’s biggest stage.
