Colombia: Muñoz strike seals World Cup knockout berth with win over DR Congo

Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after defeating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 1-0 in a tightly contested Group K encounter at Guadalajara Stadium.

Defender Daniel Muñoz scored the winning goal in the 76th minute, giving Colombia a second consecutive victory and lifting the team to six points from two matches.

Colombia controlled possession for much of the contest and created numerous chances following their opening 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan. However, they found it difficult to break down a determined DR Congo side led by goalkeeper Dimitry Mpasi, who produced several crucial saves.

Veteran midfielder James Rodríguez made his 10th World Cup appearance, equalling a Colombian record shared by former stars Freddy Rincón and Carlos Valderrama. Rodríguez tested Mpasi early in the match with a powerful effort, but the goalkeeper responded with an excellent stop.

Colombia continued to threaten through Luis Díaz and Jhon Arias, yet DR Congo resisted sustained pressure throughout the first half.

The African side created opportunities of their own through Edo Kayembe, Cédric Bakambu and Yoane Wissa, but they were unable to convert their chances.

After the interval, Colombia intensified their attacks and finally found the breakthrough when Muñoz finished from the right side of the penalty area, ending Mpasi’s impressive resistance.

Luis Díaz appeared to have doubled the advantage later in the match with a fine finish into the top corner, but officials ruled the goal out for offside.

The victory guarantees progression for Colombia national football team ahead of a decisive final Group K clash against Portugal national football team, who defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 earlier on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, DR Congo national football team remain on one point and must secure a positive result against Uzbekistan national football team in their final group-stage match to keep their qualification hopes alive.
