Citizens Demand Urgent Action Against Unplanned Commercialization in Karachi

Karachi Citizens Forum Raises Alarm Over Rapid Land-Use Changes

A press conference organized by the Karachi Citizens Forum at the Karachi Press Club highlighted growing public concern over the increasing commercialization of residential areas in Karachi.

Speakers warned that unchecked land-use changes are putting severe pressure on infrastructure, environment, and quality of life across the city.

Concerns Over Infrastructure Collapse and Urban Stress

Civil society representatives, urban planners, lawyers, and journalists expressed concern that residential neighborhoods are being rapidly converted into commercial zones without adequate planning or infrastructure upgrades.

Key issues raised included:

  • Severe shortage of green spaces
  • Increasing traffic congestion and noise pollution
  • Overburdened sewerage and drainage systems
  • Rising urban flooding risks during rainfall
  • Lack of parking, utilities, and enforcement of zoning laws

Speakers argued that existing civic infrastructure is already under strain and cannot support further unregulated commercial expansion.

Experts Warn of Governance and Planning Failures

Urban development experts, including representatives from the Karachi Urban Lab and Public Interest Law Association of Pakistan (PILAP), stressed the absence of an effective master planning system.

They criticized weak enforcement by municipal and regulatory bodies, including building control authorities, and called for stronger accountability mechanisms.

Residents Demand Transparent Urban Policy

Participants demanded that any change in land use must include:

  • Transparent master planning
  • Public consultation
  • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)
  • Upgrades in transport, drainage, and utility infrastructure
  • Strict enforcement of zoning regulations

They also urged authorities to make the legal and planning rationale behind recent commercialization decisions publicly available.

Warnings Over Long-Term Urban Decline

Speakers cautioned that continued unchecked commercialization could worsen Karachi’s environmental degradation, increase security risks, and further reduce livability—especially affecting children, women, elderly, and vulnerable communities.

They stressed that without proper planning, Karachi risks deeper infrastructural breakdown and urban disorder.

Call for Citizen Mobilization

The forum urged residents across the city to document violations and actively participate in civic advocacy to protect residential neighborhoods and demand sustainable urban governance.
