Pakistan and Russia strengthen trade cooperation discussions focusing on Gwadar Port and Eurasian transport corridor integration.
The trade cooperation between Pakistan and Russia is set to expand significantly as both countries move toward a long-term economic agreement by 2030. The trade cooperation plan aims to boost investment, energy collaboration, and regional connectivity.
Officials said the agreement could open new opportunities in multiple sectors. It also reflects a shift toward stronger Eurasian economic integration.
Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral economic relations during a recent webinar. He reportedly emphasized a positive trajectory in Pakistan–Russia ties over the past two decades.
He stated that structural barriers in trade cooperation must be addressed. According to his remarks, both sides are committed to long-term economic alignment.
Gwadar Port is expected to play a central role in the proposed International North-South Transport Corridor. The trade cooperation initiative links maritime routes with Central Asia and Russia.
Russian officials reportedly supported extending the corridor to Gwadar. This move could enhance regional trade connectivity and logistics efficiency.
International North–South Transport Corridor spans around 7,200 kilometres across sea, rail, and road networks. It connects India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Central Asia.
The expansion toward Pakistan is expected to increase regional trade flows. It also complements existing global connectivity projects like the Belt and Road Initiative.
Earlier, trade cooperation between both countries faced challenges due to payment restrictions linked to international sanctions. These issues slowed investment and credit arrangements.
Pakistan later proposed currency swap mechanisms to overcome dollar-based limitations. Discussions on local currency settlements are currently ongoing.
Vladimir Putin and Shehbaz Sharif have recently held multiple high-level meetings. These engagements reflect growing diplomatic momentum.
Officials said four meetings between the leaders helped strengthen trust. This has contributed to advancing trade cooperation frameworks.
Both countries are working on a structured Programme of Economic Cooperation by 2030. This roadmap aims to remove barriers and increase bilateral investment.
Additionally, visa facilitation measures have been introduced through a readmission agreement. This is expected to improve business travel and people-to-people exchanges.
The evolving trade cooperation strategy positions Pakistan and Russia as key players in Eurasian connectivity. It also supports broader regional stability and economic integration.
Officials emphasized that institutional engagement is expanding through forums and international platforms. This includes participation in major economic summits across Russia.
