Australia Hand Captaincy to Josh Inglis for Pakistan ODI Series After Injury Crisis

Marsh ruled out as Australia lose multiple senior players ahead of Pakistan tour

Australia will rely on their fourth-choice captain for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan national cricket team after Mitchell Marsh was ruled out due to injury, adding to a growing list of senior absentees.

Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been named captain for the three-match series, which begins this weekend in Islamabad and Lahore.

Marsh’s absence follows an ankle injury sustained during the Indian Premier League, leaving Australia without several first-choice leaders.

Leadership Void for Australia

Regular ODI captain Pat Cummins and vice-captain Travis Head are both unavailable due to IPL commitments and playoff schedules.

Key fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc are also missing the Pakistan and Bangladesh tours, further depleting Australia’s senior core.

The situation leaves Inglis to lead a largely inexperienced squad, marking another temporary captaincy assignment for him after previously leading Australia against Pakistan in November 2024.

Opportunity for Young Players

The absence of senior stars is expected to open the door for younger players, including teenager Oliver Peake, who could make his international debut during the series.

Australia are also considering adjustments to their batting and bowling combinations as they aim to rebuild balance in a heavily rotated squad.

Pakistan Aim to Capitalize on Strong Squad Form

Meanwhile, Pakistan have named a strong squad for the ODI series under captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, with experienced players including Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and others forming a competitive lineup.

Pakistan will look to capitalize on Australia’s depleted squad after recent strong performances in bilateral white-ball cricket.

Recent History Adds Extra Pressure

Australia are also seeking redemption after Pakistan swept them 3–0 in a T20I series earlier this year and won their last ODI series in 2024–25, adding extra intensity to the upcoming contest.
