AI researchers discussing artificial intelligence safety and potential risks

AI Safety Warnings Grow as Former DeepMind Researcher Raises ‘Kill All Humans’ Concern

September 15, 2026
0

A former Google DeepMind researcher has warned that artificial intelligence could potentially “kill all humans”, arguing that the industry may be running out of time to prevent such an outcome.

Bilal Chughtai, who worked as a research engineer on AGI safety and alignment at Google DeepMind, said on X that he had recently left the company and believed AI posed an extreme long-term risk.

Chughtai’s warning follows similar comments from Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who recently said he resigned partly because people developing advanced AI “earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger subsequently backed Coxon’s assessment, saying he believed there was a greater than 10% chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade.

Chughtai, who co-authored research papers during his time at Google DeepMind, left the company in July 2026, according to his LinkedIn profile. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

The latest warnings come as concerns over AI safety intensify among researchers and technology executives. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for a slowdown in the development of advanced AI systems, receiving support from SpaceX founder Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Chughtai said safely managing AI development remained possible but would require greater coordination among technology companies.

“We need to pace AI development to a speed that society can handle,” he said, arguing that emerging risks should be addressed before they result in extreme harm.

The comments have also fueled debate over so-called AI “doomerism”, with critics questioning the likelihood of catastrophic scenarios while others argue that rapid advances in AI require stronger safeguards.

US President Donald Trump has dismissed calls for tighter regulation of the AI industry, describing the sector’s warnings about regulation as a “hoax.”
